The Montgomery County Animal Shelter tells the Advocate it appreciates a UPS driver's act of kindness.
The driver discovered a box of three kittens alongside a road in Montgomery County and turned them over to the shelter.
The kittens are available immediately for fostering.
Adam Grubb, animal shelter director, said the shelter typically doesn't take in stray or feral cats as it has a TNR (Trap/Neuter/Return) program in place.
Grubb said the shelter does, however, accept owner surrenders. As an example he cited a cat recently accepted as an owner had health issues and was no longer able to care for it.
With kittens who are displaced or can't survive on their own (as in this case), they were taken in by the shelter. Grubb cited as another example kittens whose mother had been killed.
A grant has helped fund the TNR program, but the grant money has been utilized for the year. Grubb said funds for another year will be applied for and that he believed the county judge-executive was working with the Gateway Area Development District on some type of possible extension.
The shelter currently has 25 cats but just 18 cat kennels. It's partially overpopulated as the shelter is housing several cats that are part of an ongoing court case, Grubb said.
Eleven cats currently at the shelter are available for adoption.
Anyone interested in fostering the kittens can stop by the shelter and fill out a foster application that is available in the shelter lobby.
It is also accessible on the shelter's social media page under photos. Grubb said you scan the QR code.
