The public is now being encouraged to attend a hearing on Rumpke’s renewal for its landfill permit.
Michelle Rowland Noble, who has organized previous citizen public meetings alongside Shaunna Patton, shared on social media, “This is a public meeting for citizens to voice concerns, hosted by the Kentucky Division of Waste Management.”
She added, “This is a critically important public hearing on the landfill permit. Your presence matters. I strongly encourage everyone to attend.”
The application proposes to extend the expiration date of the permit to April 8, 2031.
A hearing is set for Feb. 26 at the Clay Community Center. It will begin at 5:30 p.m. It will not be a question and answer session, but an opportunity, according to a public hearing notice placed in the Advocate, for the public to make oral comments for the record on the permitting action.
The advertisement notes comments will be responded to in writing at the same time the Division of Waste Management makes a final determination on the permitting action.
A flier Noble shared on social media stresses, "Come tell the state what you have to say! Tell your family, friends and neighbors! This meeting is extremely important to attend," adding this is the state agency in charge of allowing/not allowing the landfill to operate at all and/or under what restrictions/conditions.
