Todd Coleman presented the Mt. Sterling-Montgomery County Parks and Recreation Commission with a plan for a youth triathlon to be held June 20.
Coleman presented his idea at a commission meeting Feb. 26.
The commission approved the plan after hearing a presentation from Coleman, a school resource officer with the Montgomery County School District Police.
Coleman told the commission the triathlon, which would be held at the aquatic center and Montgomery Schools facilities, would promote exercise and showcase the facilities here in the community.
There would be three age groups, 6-8, 9-11 and 12-14. Participants would compete in three legs of the event—swim, bike and run, Coleman said.
The cost would be $45 per participant.
"It's a different avenue for them to go down if they're not into traditional team sports," said Coleman, a triathlete himself.
Coleman said the nearest triathlon for youths is held in Lexington each August and attracts about 150 participants.
He told the commission the local event should draw a crowd from all over once it is established.
Coleman estimated that it will take about $2,500 to put on the event. He said he already has commitments from some sponsors, but others are sought as well.
Parks and rec would allow use of its lifeguards for the swim portion and the pool would have to open an hour later than usual, he told the commission.
Volunteers will also be needed to staff the event.
In other action, the commission:
• Approved a proposal from Leonard Littleton, coach of the high school bowling team, to establish a youth bowling league.
The team will compete for six weeks this summer with one practice and one match each week.
The cost is $65, which includes a T-shirt.
• Executive Director Phil Gross reported soccer and flag football signups are up dramatically since it reduced the cost by $20 per participant and established a multi-child discount.
He thanked the commission for having the foresight to do so.
