Construction is under way on the Montgomery County High School renovation project, marking the beginning of the largest capital improvement project in Montgomery County Schools’ history.
As work progresses, students and community members can expect to see increased construction activity on and around the high school campus. The project’s construction headquarters has been established in the band parking lot, located between the Arena and the Area Technology Center (ATC), according to a release. Because the band parking lot is closed for construction operations, the marching band will temporarily practice in the student parking lot.
Parents and visitors picking up students from football, soccer and other extracurricular activities are encouraged to use caution and remain mindful of construction traffic, heavy equipment and materials in the area.
Current construction efforts are focused on the Area Technology Center, the McNabb Middle School practice field and Buildings 1 and 2 at Montgomery County High School. These projects represent the first phase of a multi-year transformation that will enhance educational opportunities and student experiences across campus, a release said.
Among the improvements included in this phase is the construction of a new band practice facility. The current student parking lot will be resurfaced and redesigned to feature a scaled replica of the Montgomery County High School football field, providing students with a dedicated space to prepare for performances and competitions. Plans also include constructing a band tower to better support directors and staff during practice and rehearsals.
The renovation project will also relocate the welding program from its current location on Calk Avenue to the high school campus. Bringing the program on-site will eliminate the need to transport students between locations, allowing for more instructional time and creating greater opportunities for collaboration between career and technical education programs.
The project also includes the addition of a new tennis court facility on the Montgomery County High School campus. For the first time in more than two decades, MCHS tennis student-athletes will have dedicated home courts for practices and matches, creating new opportunities to host competitions, engage spectators and further strengthen the school’s growing tennis program.
“This historic investment reflects Montgomery County Schools’ commitment to cultivating excellence in everything we do. By modernizing facilities and expanding opportunities for students, the renovation project will help ensure future generations have access to learning environments that support success both inside and outside the classroom,” a release said.
To keep the community informed throughout construction, Montgomery County Schools will soon launch a dedicated construction webpage on the district website. The page will feature project updates, construction photos, timelines and other important information as work progresses.
Community members are encouraged to watch for additional updates as this exciting project moves forward.
