Local MSU Craft Academy students lay wreath at Tomb of Unknown Soldier

When Braxton Gillum looked out at the graves at Arlington National Cemetery March 22 he looked at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and wondered just how many have sacrificed their lives for our country.

He said it had a profound effect on him.

Gillum was one of two Montgomery County students attending the Craft Academy at Morehead State University who got to participate in the laying of the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Sunday. The other was Dillon Risner.

The Craft Academy offers on-campus, residential dual-enrollment for exceptionally gifted high school juniors and seniors.

It provides a unique educational experience that allows students to earn up to 60 college credits while completing their high school education. The academy focuses on excellence in science and mathematics

Gillum is junior class president at the Craft Academy at MSU.

The junior class officers from the academy were invited Sunday in the laying of the wreath during a Spring Break trip to Washington, D.C.  They were there March 18-22.

Gillum, 17, said he was honored to do so.

“The whole trip was leading up to that moment,” he said. “It was a nice moment.”

Dillon Risner, 16, is junior class secretary at the academy.

“It was an honor to be able do something like that,” he said.

During the trip, the class also visited several historical sites, including the war memorials, the Holocaust Museum, African American History Museum, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and more.

Both said the experience opened their eyes to the nation’s rich history.

“We made the most of the trip,” Risner said.

Gillum said he plans to pursue a degree in kinesiology. Risner is studying astrophysics.
