Posted

It’s a special year for the United States of America, as the country looks to celebrate it’s 250th birthday, and Montgomery County is getting the celebration started early May 16th- Armed Forces Day.

The Kentucky Historical Society, The Kentucky Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Kentucky Division of Forestry and the Gateway 250 Planning Committee, will be hosting a Liberty Tree Project planting ceremony  May 16th at 10am. It will take place at Botts Park in Mt. Sterling and is one of many such ceremonies taking place in all 120 Kentucky Counties.

The tulip poplar tree is meant to serve as a living symbol of freedom, resilience and environmental stewardship. Local historian and member of Daughters of the American Revolution Lucile Hardin says, “The Daughters of the American Revolution have had a presence through their work in Mt. Sterling and Montgomery County since at least 1929. It is a joy to extend our volunteerism to a celebration of our nation’s 250th anniversary and the signing of the Declaration of Independence”. Montgomery County Judge-Executive Chris Haddix says “The Liberty Tree Project allows us to celebrate our nation’s founding and we are proud to bring this meaningful initiative to Montgomery County.”

The event is free to attend and open to the pubic.
