Lanterns for Luke: Community gathers to celebrate life of 19-year-old lost in traffic accident

Posted

Lanterns lit the sky at sunset Monday, June 1, as they sailed off in honor of a young community member whose life was cut tragically short last week following a Powell County traffic accident.

Many of the lanterns included hand-written, personal messages.

Those who knew Luke Pierce through sports, school, church and other avenues gathered at Living Water Church for a celebration of life service.

Pierce was just 19 and a 2025 graduate of Montgomery County High School. He was widely known for his participation in bass fishing and 4-H Shooting sports. At the time of his death, he was a member of the UPike Bass Fishing Team.

Pierce’s obituary said he was the treasured son of Kelly Pierce, grandson of Debbie Pierce and the late Jim Pierce; and a brother to Katie, Emma and Morgan Howell. He is also remembered by his aunt Sarah Pierce (Mike Harvey) and beloved nieces Aubree and Addyson Harvey.

Condolences poured in on social media for Luke as well as on a tribute page on the Herald and Stewart website. Herald and Stewart handled Luke’s arrangements.

Pierce was laid to rest by his papaw, Jim, in Machpelah Cemetery, according to his obituary.

An Instagram post for the MoCo Class of 2025 that spread to other social media platforms encouraged the public to consider donating to help Luke’s family during this incredibly difficult time.

It was organized by Sophie Tibbs.

Sophie told the Advocate donations collected have since been turned over to Luke’s mother, Kelly. Many knew Luke and family through his mother’s local floral business, Always in Season.  Kelly has decided, Sophie said, that money collected be used to establish a scholarship in Luke’s honor as her son was always striving to help others.
