Gary Lee Egelston, 77, of Frenchburg, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2025, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Born March 13, 1948, in Dayton, Ohio, and raised in Frenchburg, he was the son of the late Chester “Peanut” and Mary Egelston. A proud lifelong resident of his hometown, he grew up with a deep love for his community and a strong sense of duty to others. It was in Frenchburg that he met the love of his life, Joanne, with whom he shared a beautiful life built on faith, family and devotion. He answered the call to serve his country when he was drafted into the Vietnam War. After completing his service, he returned home to Frenchburg to begin the next chapter of his life—raising a family with his precious Joanne and continuing to serve those around him. A man of unwavering faith, he was a dedicated member of Fellowship Christian Assembly, where he lived out his belief in serving others with kindness and humility. His servant’s heart extended into his community through his many years with the Menifee County Volunteer Fire Department, where he proudly served as Fire Chief. Whether responding to a call or lending a helping hand to a neighbor, he could always be counted on—often arriving with a smile and a word of encouragement. He was known by many titles—father, brother, uncle, friend—but perhaps his favorite was “Popie.” He cherished his family above all else and loved spending time cheering on his beloved Cincinnati Reds and Bengals alongside them. In his spare time, he loved spending peaceful days fishing, working with his hands in the woodshop, and relaxing with his loyal dog, Oliver. His laughter, warmth and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
His legacy of faith, service and love will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
Survivors include his loving daughter, Marybeth Thomas (Brad) of Mt. Sterling; two cherished grandsons, Tyler Thomas (Andrea) and Ryan Thomas (Madison); and dear brother, Paul Egelston (Karen) of Frenchburg.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Joanne Combs Egelston.
Service was conducted Sunday, Oct. 26, at Taul Funeral Home Chapel Frenchburg with Pastor Harry B. Jones, Pastor Tim Rhodes and Pastor Mike Welch officiating. Burial was in Combs-Jewell-Day Cemetery.
