Former county commissioner creates landfill community survey

Posted

Former County Commissioner Melody Townsend has created  a community survey regarding the landfill.

It’s purpose, she said, is help determine “how is the landfill currently affecting you and do you want to be kept updated on the potential expansion status,” Townsend said.

Townsend stressed that not everyone is on social media and the survey is intended  to understand concerns, identify people who want updates and encourage participation.

As of Monday afternoon the survey had been open less than a week and of the first 101 responses, more than 82 percent indicated they oppose the expansion because it negatively affects them personally, more than 71 percent indicated it affects someone they care about and nearly two-thirds, 63.4 percent, said the issue will affect how they vote, according to results provided by Townsend.

Of the respondents to date, 52.5 percent said they want updates/information, 41.6 percent said they would submit written comments, 35.6 percent said they would participate in peaceful protests and 24.8 percent said they would help organize/community advocacy efforts.

Townsend said the community survey results reflect views only of those who participate and that it’s not intended to be a scientific countywide poll.

Two additional efforts are under way to help the public provide feedback. See related story below.
