Eeeeek!!!!!! DON'T LOOK UP????!!!!

Posted

Don't look down! More like don't look up???!!!!

You never know what might be lurking overhead—perhaps just a friendly little icicle that's fallen from a roof and is now dangling from a power line ... just waiting to fall as you pass by.

LOOK AT THE ATTACHED PICTURE AND VIDEO IF YOU HAVEN'T YET!. I just happened to be walking back from my lunch break today and noticed that icicle. You better believe I moved over ... I don't think if someone offered me money (of any amount) I'd chance walking underneath that! I would have knocked it down had it not been up so high too.

If you are a horror movie fan, think about that series of movies where freak accidents happen to people unexpectedly! Yes, I've seen every single one of them! If you aren't comfortable traveling behind a big log truck, you know exactly what movies I'm referencing here.

Would you be surprised to know that 15 people are actually killed by icicles annually in the United States? Scary, huh?

But, it's important to note, according to the Air Force Safety Center, "While icicles are rarely sharp or large enough to impale a person, they can still cause bruises, cuts and broken bones when they fall."

So with that in mind, be careful out there folks! It's only January, and already Old Man Winter has been a little unkind to us.

There's a ton of snow and ice remaining all around us. With cold temperatures, it's still super slick in spots, and with the sun appearing here and there, things are beginning to melt. Be mindful of your surroundings, and if you are walking, DON'T LOOK UP!

That's a joke ... in all seriousness, do look up.

The Air Force Safety Center recommends:

  • Removing icicles over doors and walkways.
  • Use a long pole to tap icicles and get them to fall. Hitting them hard may damage a facility or home, so it is important to use good ergonomics and not overreach. It is also recommended to get them while they are small and easily removed.
  • If possible, avoid walkways with large icicles (note to self, lol!)
