If you've ever wanted to try disc golf but were afraid to give it a whirl, or want to become a better player, there is an event Saturday, May 30, just for you.
Some experienced players will be introducing the public to the sport and helping current players improve their skills beginning at 11 a.m. at the soccer field at Easy Walker Park. The event is sponsored by Mt. Sterling-Montgomery County Parks and Recreation.
"We're encouraging all ages and all skill levels to come out," programs director Ian Roberts told the Advocate.
Roberts acknowledges that for many beginning players learning the course, rules and intricacies of the sport can be difficult, but this event will help players become more comfortable.
Experts will be offering hands-on experience covering throwing, putting and the rules of the game.
Roberts said the event is perfect for beginners who are trying to learn the game.
At least six expert players are expected to be on hand to offer tips not only for beginners, but experienced players as well, he said.
The first 25 youths will receive a free gift bag and discs, Roberts said.
Parks and Rec also hopes to offer prizes at the event, he said.
Botts Parks currently has a moderate level 18-hole course and parks and rec is looking to develop a nine-hole course for beginners at Easy Walker, Roberts said.
Parks and Rec plans to post a layout of the existing course on its website, he said.
It plans to model the Easy Walker course after one in Richmond, Roberts said.
The one at Easy Walker may eventually be expanded to 18 holes, he said.
Disc golf is one of the nation's fastest growing sports.
