Brenda Gilvin Barker, 83, passed peacefully into the presence of her Lord, Thursday, Aug. 6, 2026, at Homestead Nursing Home in Lexington.

She was born Oct. 5, 1942, in Montgomery County, and was a lifelong Kentuckian and native of Mt. Sterling.  She attended Mt. Sterling City Schools and spent much of her life in the community she loved.  As a little girl, she, her sister, Marie and mother, “Woody” Gilvin would travel to Lexington and sing on WLAP-AM radio.  She worked at Jerry’s Restaurant and the Midland Trail Hotel, where she was known for her friendly personality and customer service.  Throughout her life, she faced significant health challenges after contracting rheumatic fever as a young child.  Nothing brought her greater pride than her son, Grant Adams.  She celebrated his distinguished career with the Kentucky State Police, where he served as a Trooper, Detective and Sergeant.  His courage and dedication were recognized with the agency’s highest honor, the Valor of Honor Award, and he was also named a Kentucky Colonel.  She also deeply loved her grandson, Tyler Grant Adams, and found great joy in her great-granddaughter, Kimber Adams.  Family was always at the center of her  life.  She loved cooking, and family gatherings were often made sweeter by her famous Japanese Fruit Pie and homemade fruit cobblers.  She also appreciated one of life’s simple pleasures—a hot, strong cup of coffee shared with family and friends.  She will be remembered for her warm smile, laughter, quick sense of humor and unwavering love for her family.  Though her later years were marked by profound loss and deep sorrow following the deaths of her son, Grant and grandson, Tyler, she carried their memories with enduring love every day.  Today, we find comfort in knowing that her earthly struggles have ended.  She has been reunited with those she loved, and she now rests peacefully in the loving arms of her Savior.  Her legacy of love, resilience and devotion to family will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Survivors include her nephew, Byron Keith Yarber of Lexington; cousins, Karen Sue and Billy Wayne Gilvin; great-granddaughter, Kimber Adams; and numerous other family members and friends who will forever keep her memory alive.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Barker; cherished son, Timothy “Grant” Adams; grandson, Tyler Grant Adams; sister, Yvonne Marie Yarber; mother, Mary Woodson Gilvin; aunts, Doris Tyree, Opal Foley and Lena Gilvin; and nephew, Eric Damon Yarber.

Service was conducted Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Taul Funeral Home Chapel with Brandon Gilvin officiating.  Burial was in Machpelah Cemetery.
