STORY UPDATE: Arts center asks public to sign letter of support for MCHS art dept.

Posted

UPDATE: In a followup today, with the Advocate, it was relayed an agreement may have been reached and no cuts to the art dept. are likely. The advocate plans to attend the site based meeting this week, however, and will share any additional information.

From the Gateway Regional Arts Center:
URGENT: SUPPORT THE MCHS ART DEPARTMENT

We have received word that Montgomery County High School is considering cutting an art teacher position, a decision that would seriously damage the progress, opportunity, and creative future of so many students and reduce the department's capacity by 50%.

If this cut happens, the department could lose advanced and specialized classes like sculpture, graphic design, portfolio, painting, watercolor, and advanced drawing, reducing student opportunities back to only the basics.

This is not just about one position. This is about protecting a department that has helped students find their passion, build portfolios, win awards, serve the community, and pursue futures in the arts.

We need Montgomery County taxpayers, parents, alumni, community members, and supporters of public education to sign a Letter of Support immediately - we will deliver this letter and a list of undersigned citizens before the SBDM decision on April 22, 2026.

The arts are not expendable.
Our students deserve better.
Our community must speak now.

Please sign the Letter of Support today and help us stand up for the MCHS Art Department!
