6 more weeks of winter???!!!!!! Groundhog sees shadow

Posted

Say it's NOT so!

Unfortunately, Punxsutawney Phil, the famous weather predicting groundhog, apparently saw his shadow this morning.

As the legend goes, we are in store for six more weeks of winter weather.

We're hoping Phil's prediction is WAY off!

Nonetheless, here's some factual information about the famous groundhog:

Every Feb. 2, the small town of Punxsutawney, Penn., draws thousands of visitors for the groundhog popping out of its burrow to tell us whether we will endure more winter or an early spring.

According to visitpa.com, this tradition actually dates back to ancient European weather folklore.

In the U.S., the first Groundhog Day was in 1887 by a group calling itself the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. That group ventured to Gobbler's Knob to witness Phil's prediction, according to visitpa.com, "kicking off what would become a national sensation."

Groundhog Day has since inspired movies, TV moments, etc., according to visitpa.com.

So how accurate is the legendary forecaster? According to visitpa.com, that's debatable, some argue he's right around 40 percent of the time. Die-hard fans insist he's never wrong.

You prob also didn't know his burrow in Barclay Square is open for visitors year-round.

According to folklore, Phil is more than 100 years old. Legend claims he "drinks a secret 'elixir of life' each summer, granting him extraordinary longevity and ensuring he remains the same groundhog who started it all in 1887."

In reality, visitpa.com notes many groundhogs have filled the role over the years, "but the legend is part of the charm."
