MCHS baseball squad honored at banquet

6/21/2019

A pair of shoes to this player, a helmet to another.

Montgomery County High School baseball coach Chris Varney passed out awards last week to the MCHS Indians who posted a 28-7 record.

The coach doesn’t normally give individual awards, instead choosing to pass out equipment that players will be able to use in the future.

But the Indians, parents and fans did gather to celebrate a memorable season.

One of the more impressive things about the past campaign were the Indians’ seven losses.

The Tribe lost to Madison Central, Harrison County, Hazard, Raceland, Rowan County (they also beat the Vikings), Lawrence County and Beechwood.

The collective records of those teams looked like this:

Beechwood 38-2
Rowan County 39-4
Lawrence County 35-6
Raceland 30-8
Harrison County 30-9
Hazard 29-8
Madison Central 27-10
Total 228-47

Quite a remarkable set of records that simply says that the only way to beat the Indians was to be a really good baseball team.

The banquet featured WKYT-TV’s Brian Milam, who played high school baseball at Butler High School in Louisville and then was a member of the Morehead State University squad where he was a teammate of Montgomery County assistant coach Todd Jacobs.

One of the highlights of the event was the naming of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s Academic All-State Team members from the MCHS squad.

Of the 29 players who were on the Montgomery County varsity and junior varsity squads in 2019, there were 24 names either Academic First Team All-State members or Honorable Mention.

To be on the All-State First Team, players must have a 3.75 grade point average or higher and to be honorable mention they must have a 3.25 GPA or above.

Named to the squad from Montgomery County were:
First Team: Brandon Dyer, Trey Carroll, Tyler Jacobs, Peyton Carroll, Seth Adams, Alex Ison, Ty Eads, Jay Eads, Jaxson Damron, Meier Patrick, Davis Johnson, Luke Fuller, Jordan McVey, Ben Ison, Devon Adams, Bryce Butler, Will Lane and Jon Bruner.
Honorable Mention: Spencer Donathan, Trevor Igo, Alex Ison, Jakob Sponcil, Braxton Hunley and Chandler McCoy.
“Any coach will tell you that players that are good students generally make better players,” Varney said. “It says a lot about this team that they have that type of overall commitment to academics and it’s a standard that we certainly want to perpetuate in the years ahead.”
Although the banquet was a final send-off for seniors Ty Eads, Jay Eads, Ben McDonald, Braxton Hunley and Luke Fuller, there’s a strong contingent of players that will return for Varney and his staff.
