Cemetery board upset about dumping at Olive Hill Cemetery

By Tom Marshall
Senior Advocate writer

Someone desecrated the historic Olive Hill Cemetery on Spencer Road last week by dumping an old mattress and box springs on top of some of the graves there.

Their actions upset those who oversee the cemetery.

“We will have more eyes watching and taking down license plates if we need to,” said Brenda Ralls, the cemetery board’s secretary.

The board is also looking at locking up the gate to the cemetery at night to prevent more vandalism, Ralls and cemetery sexton Oliver Taul said.
The board is also considering closing off the adjacent Lincoln View Cemetery at night, Ralls said.

Mowing and overall grounds keeping is done by inmate labor from the Montgomery Regional Jail. Ralls and Taul said they are thankful for Jailer Eric Jones and Judge-Executive Wally Johnson for use of the inmates.

Taul said a nearby resident noticed a pickup pull up into the cemetery one day last week with bedding in the back and later pull out, Taul said. The vandalism was discovered a short time later, he said.

Ralls said she suspects the vandals were moving and had to get rid of the bedding materials at the end/start of the month.

Johnson offered to have county employees remove the materials.
Ralls and Taul said the cemetery also has had problems with people target shooting and have previously complained about people driving four-wheelers on the grounds.

Ralls noted that any shooting endangers cattle at a farm on the other side of the cemetery.

Ralls and Taul said they want people to know these activities are disrespectful and are not acceptable behavior.

“We want the public to know that this is not a shooting range or a dumping ground,” Ralls said.

If anyone sees any suspicious activities at the cemetery they can report it at Montgomery County Central Dispatch at 498-8720.
