The Montgomery County High School swimming and diving team had the school’s biggest weekend ever at the Region 8 Meet Friday and Saturday at the University of Kentucky’s Winchester Aquatic Center.

Coach Lainey Neal’s squad qualified the most swimmers and divers in school history for this week’s Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Swimming and Diving Meet to be held next Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 21-23, at the Ralph Wright Natatorium at the University of Louisville.

Thirteen team members will compete at the state meet in 12 different events.

Junior diver Garrett Craycraft set the mark high for the MCHS squad with a second place finish and in the process scored high enough to earn All-American honors, the first time in almost two decades that’s happened for a member of the MCHS squad.

Will Ratliff earned AA honors back in the 2000 and 2001 seasons competing in the 100 yard breaststroke and the 50 yard freestyle.
The Montgomery County boys’ diving team scored more points than any other team in the region.

Sophomore Jonah Dunn of Tates Creek won the diving competition with a score of 465.65 while Craycraft scored 426.55.

In only his third year of competition, Craycraft is still on the upward swing.

“His dives aren’t always the prettiest but he’s just a natural at twisting and tumbling and he’s doing dives that have a really high degree of difficulty and pulling them off. He’s going to keep getting better and better.”

Meanwhile, freshman Meier Patrick finished fourth and another MCHS freshman, Bryson Toy was eighth as all three of the MCHS divers qualified for the state meet.

Montgomery County is the only team in the region without an indoor facility in their community, which hurts both in terms of practice and in numbers.

One has to wonder how many more student/athletes would be participating in the sport if there was a practice facility in the country.
“To be competitive you have to be a full-time swimmer,” Neal said. “Without a facility here you can’t do that without a lot of dedication on the part of parents.

“We have four legitimate full-time swimmers and a couple of full-time divers. Other than that we have some great athletes that fill in the gaps for us.

“It’s hard to do any better than we do right now without a training facility.”

Here are the Montgomery County results from the events at the regional meet:
