Local stray beagle becomes part of royal family

A Montgomery County dog is a story of rags to riches after officially becoming a member of the royal family last week.

Meghan Markle, former “Suits” actress and now Duchess of Sussex, owns Guy, a beagle that was dropped off as a stray at the Montgomery County Animal Shelter in 2015. Markle and Prince Harry were married during a royal wedding May 19.

Shelter Director J’Rie Elliott said Guy was held by the shelter for two weeks, one week as Kentucky law dictates and an additional week, before being pulled by A Dog’s Dream Rescue.

The Ontario-based organization rescues mostly beagles from Kentucky and Ohio that are on a list to be euthanized because no one wants them, according to its Facebook page.

Markle was living in Toronto while “Suits” was being filmed and met Guy during an adoption event in the area, media outlets reported.

“It’s definitely a rags to riches story and we are absolutely thrilled,” Elliott said. “We are thrilled that someone of her caliber, and someone as famous as she is and has the option to pick any pet, chose to adopt.”
Elliott added this is an example that shelter dogs are still good pets.
“Adopt don’t shop,” Elliott said.

Guy was reportedly seen riding with Queen Elizabeth II the day before the wedding of Markle and Prince Harry.
