Boys' golf team wins fifth event

Winning high school golf tournaments is not an easy thing to do.
Particularly when you move into the upper echelon of competition and every time out you’re facing in the vicinity of 20 teams.

It’s been a banner year for Coach Kevin Lawson and his Montgomery County High School boys’ golf squad and they notched another tournament title Saturday, their fifth of the season.

Montgomery County played in the West Carter High School Boys Golf Invitational at Hidden Cove Golf Course near Grayson on Saturday and came away with an 18-shot victory over the field with Ashland Paul Blazer finishing second.

Montgomery County had earlier won two different tournaments at Eagle Trace Golf Course in Morehead, hosted by Rowan County, along with the Bourbon County Invitational and their own Montgomery County Invitational at Indian Creek.

On Saturday, junior Jon Kosier fired a 74 to lead the Tribe and was followed by two other juniors, Kyle Amburgey and Luke Fuller who each shot 76. Senior Evan King rounded out the Montgomery County scoring with a 78.

Also competing were eighth grader Logan McCormick who had an 82 along with eighth grader Chandler McCoy who shot a 95.

“Overall, a good day,” said Coach Lawson. “Three oh four is a pretty good score, we just have to tighten up our short games and quit wasting some shots.”

But as Lawson said, the Indians “aren’t wasting as many as we were early in the year” even though they’re still leaving a few shots on the course.

“I was really happy to see Evan play well,” he continued. “This is his senior year and his high school career is winding down so it’s good to see him playing well.”

The Indians will compete at Lakeside Golf Course in Lexington for the 2017 Kentucky High School Golf Coaches Invitational on Saturday and then begin post-season play next Monday in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Region 12 Tournament at Eagle Trace Golf Course in Morehead.
