A mother accused of drugging her newborn baby to keep it quiet pleaded guilty to an abuse charge last week.

Chasity Lewis, 30, entered a guilty plea Oct. 11 in Montgomery County Circuit Court to a charge of first-degree criminal abuse of a child 12 or under. She could face five to 10 years in prison.

Formal sentencing was scheduled for Nov. 7 before Judge Beth Maze.
Authorities allege that Lewis crushed a suboxone pill into a powder, rubbed it onto a passifier and gave it to the 5-day- old child when it wouldn’t quit crying.

When the baby failed to wake up after 14 hours, Lewis’ mother reportedly forced the mother to take the child to the hospital.
Lewis reportedly told authorities that she gave the drug to the baby to ease withdrawal symptoms.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office became involved after the Dept. of Social Services reported the incident, which allegedly occurred at an apartment on Anessa Lane off Spencer Road

Lewis was arrested after an interview with authorities Nov. 27, 2015.
